Art of Becoming – A Look at Everyday Practice and Preparation

Time: 9am – 11am

Instructor: Sir Octamasades

Course Description: Discussion on what it takes to prepare yourself, both physically and mentally, for our sport as it pertains to tournament fighting.  As well as taking what you are learning and making it your own.  This class will cover both the physical and mental aspects of practice. NOTE: Participants should have a basic foundation in SCA combat.

Cost: $1.00

Course Description: Learn the basic theory behind how to construct all types of garments for any size using minimal fabric. Pattern drafting and construction techniques will be discussed and demonstrated. Handout will be provided.

Students need to Bring: Wear comfortable clothing that is suitable for moving.


Medieval Glass bead making for the Modern Age - Beginners

Time: 9am – 11am

Instructor: Marianella de Ravenna

Course Description: This glass will introduce students to the basics of

glass bead making including safety around glass and flame, work area set

up, introducing the glass to the flame, shaping a bead, adding color to a

bead and what to do with it once it's formed. Students should go home with

at least two beads of their own making.

Cost: $2.00

Minimum Students: 1 Maximum Students: 8

Students need to Bring: Clear safety glasses and clothing made of natural

fibres. Long sleeves must be kept out of the way and long hair must be tied

back.

Students should bring a torch if they have one or if they wish to be instructed on its' use in particular. For those who simply want to try their hand at bead making, torches will be available on a rotation basis.

Torch: A basic plumbers torch and a can of MAPP gas. You will also need:

A 4 inch diameter ring clamp to go around the can of Mapp, a 4 inch angle

bracket, and a 3" C-clamp.

Additional items to make the process easier are: Clear safety glasses, a

metal cookie sheet with rim, an old stainless steel cooking knife, small

needle-nosed pliers.



Medieval Glass bead making for the Modern Age – Intermediate

Time: 11am – 1pm

Instructor: Marianella de Ravenna

Course Description: Knowledge of the topics covered in the Introduction

class is mandatory. In this class, students will learn how to make their

own thin rods of one color of glass and multiple colors of glass (stringer,

twisties and mosaic cane). A brief introduction of what to do with the

materials just created will be demonstrated.

Cost: $2.00

Minimum Students: 1 Maximum Students: 8

Students need to Bring: Clear safety glasses and clothing made of natural

fibres. Long sleeves must be kept out of the way and long hair must be tied

back.

The Principals of Motion and Movement in Armor

Time: 11am – 1pm

Instructor: Sir Octamasades

Course Description: Discussion and practical application of Movement in fighting as it pertains to one on one combat.  This class will cover body motion as well as foot work.  We will discuss moving, and moving with, your opponent.  As well as understanding the dance of the fight.  Participants are encouraged to come in armor, as your armor is a determining factor on your range of motion and balance.

Introduction to Nalbinding

Time: 11am – 1pm

Course Description: This will be a hands on class to learn the very basics of Nalbinding. We will be using 100% wool so please be aware if you have allergies.

Fiore de Liberi

Course Description: Learn the authentic 15th century techniques of one of the great medieval masters at arms. From wrestling and dagger to longsword. Out of armour. Some gear will be provided. If students have any blunt steel swords, wooden wasters, dagger simulators (sharpening steels or short lengths of dowel) they should bring them.

Cost: $3.00

Minimum Students: 3 Maximum Students: 30

Students need to Bring: Clothing that is comfortable to move in.


Wood Block Printing - "Xylography"

Time: 2pm – 4pm

Course Description: Carve a wooden stamp.

Writing With Runes

Time: 2pm – 4pm

Instructor: Taliesin ap Hafgan & Topher MacKenzie

Course Description: Suitable for ages 10+ to Adults. The art of writing in Viking runes (also known as the Elder Futhark)., the sacred alphabet of the Germanic peoples of Northern Europe. The class will offer basic instruction on the history of runes, their meaning and the writing of the characters. Runes are steeped in history & spirituality and were commonly used for divination. Some consider runes to be an ancient oracle particularly when considered in the history, stories and myths of the Vikings and Norse.

The very name ‘rune’ derives from the ancient Gothic ‘runa’ meaning a secret or a mystery (Runes, Dee, J 001)

Cost: $5.00

Minimum Students: 4 Maximum Students: 8

Students need to Bring: The course fee includes all items required to participate in the class. Students will be able to keep the handouts and may choose to purchase the pens and other supplies at the end of the class for a nominal fee.


Dye Techniques

Time: 2pm – 6pm

Instructor: Caoimhinn ingen Domnaille

Course Description: This is an introduction to dyeing animal fibres. Methods are based upon chemical analysis of extant tablet-woven pieces of 10th century Birka, Sweden. We will go through the steps of fibre preparation, mordanting and then dyeing using Cochineal (identical dye pigment as Kermes), Indigo and another mystery dye. Students will walk away with at least 3 finished fibre products.

Cost: $15.00

Minimum Students: 2 Maximum Students: 6

Students need to Bring: An apron or wear clothing that can be stained.


Making Your Own Set of Runes

Time: 4pm – 6pm

Instructor: Taliesin ap Hafgan & Topher MacKenzie

Prerequisite: Writing with Runes

Course Description: Suitable for ages Teens to Adult. At the end of this class each participant will have their own set of Viking (Elder Futhark) runes, which can be used for divination etc. The runes will still have to air-dry completely before being used. Students may want to varnish the runes after they have dried.

Cost: $15.00

Minimum Students: 4 Maximum Students: 8

Students need to Bring: The course fee includes all items required to participate in the class, including ‘marblex’ grey self-hardening modelling clay. Students will be able to keep the handouts and the trays (to hold the runes). Tools etc will be supplied for the class but will not be available for subsequent purchase, however, students will find they are common tools that they probably already have access to.

Henna

Time: 4pm – 6pm

Course Description: Lean the basics of applying henna designs and try it out.

Medieval Glass bead making for the Modern Age – Open Torch

Time: 2pm – 6pm

Instructor: Marianella de Ravenna

Course Description: This class should be considered an open forum for

points of interest to advanced students. It can include demonstrations of

how to create hollow beads, vessels, pendants and buttons. Students will

work on their own Mapp torches and have a chance to work on an oxy-propane

system. This is a workshop style class where students will pursue their own

interests with the aid of the instructor.

Cost: $2.00

fibres. Long sleeves must be kept out of the way and long hair must be tied

Course Description: Make a haversack style bag in the class. All materials will be provided.

Leather Armor Crafting Techniques

Time: 9am – 1pm

Course Description: Students will learn the basic construction technique of leather armour. Each student will complete and take with them a leather demi-gauntlet.

Students need to Bring: Will be dealing with hot wax so bring a heavy apron or heavy clothing.


Introduction to Reading Runes …. Divination

Time: 9am – 11am

Instructor: Taliesin ap Hafgan & Topher MacKenzie

Course Description: Suitable for Adults Only

As an introduction to divination or the reading of runes students will be shown and practice a couple of the simpler rune castings.

We will begin with the ‘Three Norns’ and then move on to the ‘Runic Cross’ and if time permits conclude with the ‘Five Directions’. The class will begin with basic instruction on the meaning of each of the runes and then move on to the first of the castings. Students will be expected to actually attempt readings using the basic information they have been provided with and the parameters of the specific casting being used.

Minimum Students: 4 Maximum Students: 8

Students need to Bring: The course fee includes all items required to participate in the class. Students will keep the handouts. If students have a set of 25 runes (including ‘wyrd’) they may want to bring them along.

Mongolian/Russian Hats

Time: 11am – 1pm

Course Description: Learn how to pattern draft and construct a 6 panel hat.

Cost: $5.00

Minimum Students: 2 Maximum Students: 10

Students need to Bring: Scissors. If you want a fur band please bring your own fake or real fur.


Introduction to Celtic Knot Drawing

Time: 11am – 1pm

Instructor: Taliesin ap Hafgan & Topher MacKenzie

Course Description: Suitable for ages 10+ to Adults.

De-mystifying the art of drawing Basic Celtic Knots utilizing grids and graph paper.

Celtic Knots always intrigue but also intimidate because of their interlocking complexity. By the end of the class students will know how to draw a basic Celtic knot through more complex knots and concluding with either a border or a cross.
